With a few mused additions over the years of my growing up, this is what he might have told me: Elephant paths, never to be forgotten by the herd, cross the African landscape as if they remain outside the realms of time. Elephants have innate knowledge of these centuries old paths, which is an ongoing mystery that many an experienced hunter has never been able to fathom out. Human habitations and structures, unwittingly built on ancient elephant paths in the bush, would suffer the wrath of elephants. In spiritual cognisance of their inherited routes, they would walk through them, mock charge them, and even trash them if they could. Matters of the spirit could not be altered, burnt, crushed or wet – they were simply timeless and indestructible, the old hunter might have implied.
